LNG Tank Analysis and Design System

Use the LUSAS LNG Tank Analysis and Design System to automatically create a range of 2D and 3D finite element models of full containment circular tanks from user-defined parameters. Carry out a range of analyses and optional design checks for specified load combinations.

New in Version 21

The LNG Tank System now supports:

  • Double walled steel tanks.
  • Solid models of concrete tanks with buttresses. These are coupled structural – thermal, full, half or quarter sized models, with explicitly modelled wall reinforcement, ringbeam reinforcement and spillage scenarios.

Developments since its initial release include:

  • Modelling of elevated tanks including isolator, pedestals, with raft and optionally piles
  • Automatic creation of piled foundations for above ground tanks
  • Spillage (thermal) analysis
  • Wind loading to ASCE (USA) and GB50010 (China) codes
  • RC design to GB50009 (China)
  • Comprehensive design check reports in spreadsheets.
  • A range of pre-processing improvements.

In detail...

Defining models

Create single and double-walled steel tank models with the LNG tank wizards that are optimised according to their intended use.  Model / analysis types supported include:

  • 2D Axisymmetric Static Structural Analysis
  • 2D Axisymmetric Construction Stage Analysis
  • 2D Axisymmetric Thermal Analysis
  • 3D Shell Static Structural Analysis
  • 3D Shell Eigenvalue Analysis
  • 2D Beam-Stick FSSI Seismic Analysis
  • 3D Solid models

Viewing results

Solve base, thermal, seismic, staged construction, creep / shrinkage and eigenvalues analyses within one model, using the innovative LUSAS multiple analysis facility.

View results for all or selected parts of a model using separate layers for diagram, contour, vector and discrete value data.
  • Manually specify basic load combinations, defining loadcases to be included and load factors to be used.
  • Use Smart Combinations to generate maximum and minimum results, reducing the number of combinations and envelopes required.
  • Define envelopes of multiple loadcases to provide maximum and minimum results.
  • Plot bending moment and shear force diagrams and visualise structural deflections.
  • Display results in global or local directions, in element directions, or at any specified orientation.
  • Selectively output results to spreadsheet applications for additional calculation and graphing uses.
  • For concrete modelling, plot crack width contours, crack patterns and values for supported design codes.
  • Use inspection locations to obtain results for user-defined positions of interest on a model.
  • Transform and display results in global or local directions, in element directions, or at any specified orientation.

Plot graphs showing, for example, the variation of moment Mx with wall height from selections made on the model.
Use other wizards to automatically convert stress distributions at chosen slicing locations on models into section forces and output to a spreadsheet.

Design checks

Define wall, slab, roof reinforcement and prestress tendon arrangements in a suitable base model to enable design checks to be carried out.
Define  load combinations and code parameters and output force / moment results and view force / moments charts for selected locations.
Carry out design checks for the RC slab and wall. Perform ULS checks for stress, moments and axial stress, and reinforcement design. Carry out SLS checks for crack widths and utilisation.

Customisation

LNG tank system software can be customised to clients' requirements by LUSAS as part of an agreed and paid-for development contract.
This service is being provided currently to a number of clients in order to meet their particular in-house needs.

Learn it fast

Existing users can easily apply the LNG Tank System because it works in a similar way to other tools they are familiar with.
